OXFAM Hunger Banquet

On November 17, 2010, Feelgood UIUC collaborated with Volunteer Illini Project and Habitat for Humanity in the annual OXFAM Hunger Banquet. This gave all the participants a chance to think and meditate on the seriousness of world hunger.

Here is how the banquet worked:
Every participant was given a slip of paper at the entrance. Each slip had a new identity with different income levels: low, middle, and high. There is also a brief explanation of each person's social status and circumstance. Each class receives food that is appropriate for their social income status - bread for low income, mac and cheese with water for middle income, burritos and chips with nice drinks and servers for high incomes, etc.

The banquet was an eye-opening experience for everyone and it really showed how serious and yet how solvable these problems were. The world does not lack food. What we lack is the appropriate distribution of the food throughout the world. If we are a little more conscious of how the food and resources are spread throughout the world, we would be able to overcome these problems.

The middle income groups in the back, high income groups in the center.

Low income groups sitting at the front of the room, on the floor.

My new identity for the day.
My name was Sophea, and I was a part of the middle income group.
The rest of the story can be read from the picture above... :)
